Tay Martins (a.k.a. Eyitayo Oyekunle) was born in 1970, in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. He studied Fine Arts and acquired a Higher National Diploma at The Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He started his IT career as a computer graphic artist in 1998; working at Policy Magazine as a page-set artist and desktop designer. He soon traveled to South Africa in 2005 and worked as a graphic designer, web moderator, content creator and video editor at the New Media Department of MultiChoice, DStv, Randburg, Johannesburg. While at DStv, he worked on many talent hunts projects like Big Brother Africa, Big Brother Nigeria, Idol West Africa, Idols South Africa, Project Fame and many more.

In his opinion; the greatest engineers God has created are fine artists, considering the likes of Leonardo da Vinci. Tay’s venture into engineering was after he met with God, in a call up to heaven. In his dream, his spirit was separated from the body as he ascended. He found himself standing before the throne of God. God appeared and spoke to him and then he woke up into reality, hence his engagement in God’s church as a minister.

According to Tay Martins, Africans are in poverty because they pray too much than they work. The planting and growing of too many churches especially in Nigeria (the most populous African nation) is an attestation to his observation. In his words: “Poverty is the end-game when churches are buying up the factories and converting them to auditoriums for worship”. It is okay to build churches but God’s ministry should engage more in building facilities for research, training and hackathons.

His journey with God has guided him into engineering by which he created clean energy-generating turbine concepts and clean energy cooling concepts. “I did not study science at school; neither did I pursue any course in physics or chemistry. All my life, being an artist is my God’s given talent. I have never been an apprentice in any form of artisanship career. But, mysteriously, engineering consumed my head and mind shortly after establishing my connection with the Spirits. God is a Spirit.”

Tay Martins is the founder and Pastor of Kingdom Unity Ministry. A Christian movement with a focus on the validity and superiority of Grace. According to him, many of today’s church has become the institution of fear. The churches of today are leveraging and profiting from the fears of their members. In his opinion, the church should put the focus of the faithful on forgiveness rather than concentrating on the consequences of the believer’s shortcomings. The churches in Nigeria are overdue for a systemic restructuring.
